In applications using heavier oil grades, a preheater may be integrated to reduce viscosity for proper atomisation; a filter is typically fitted on the inlet side to protect the pump and nozzle from dirt. When replacing a pump of this class, common failure modes to verify before condemning the pump include worn gears that reduce delivery, a failing pressure regulation stage that causes unstable flame, a leaking shaft seal that draws air or leaks oil, and a solenoid coil that fails open, leaving the burner unable to cut off fuel cleanly.
