An aquastat of this type is a mechanical temperature sensing and switching device used directly in boiler water circuits. Unlike NTC sensors that report to a control board, such aquastats act as self-contained thermostats or limit switches. They are typically mounted via an immersion well or clamped onto a pipe, and their internal bimetal or capillary element opens or closes a contact when the water temperature reaches a set point. This direct action makes them suitable for high-limit cut-out, low-limit maintenance, or boiler temperature control without relying on the main controller. When selecting a replacement aquastat, the key parameters are the switching point (the temperature at which it changes state), the differential (the gap between on and off), and the reset type—manual or automatic. The probe form (immersion length, clamp-on size) and connection method (capillary length, terminal type) must match the installation. A mismatch in switching range could prevent the boiler from reaching proper temperature or fail to protect against overheating. Typical failures include a drifting set point that causes erratic burner cycling, a broken capillary tube, or poor thermal contact between a clamp-on probe and the pipe surface. Always verify that the replacement part’s temperature range and reset behaviour are compatible with the existing control circuit and boiler safety requirements.
