This article is an oil nozzle of the type used in pressure-jet oil burners. The nozzle atomises fuel oil into a fine spray cone so that it can mix with combustion air and burn completely. It is a precision, consumable component that sits at the end of the burner’s blast tube, directly downstream of the oil pump and the solenoid valve. The spray cone shape and droplet size determine how the flame sits relative to the combustion head and the heat exchanger. Parts of this class are selected by three parameters that must all match the burner manufacturer’s specification: flow rate (given in US gallons per hour or kg/h at a reference pressure, typically 7 bar or 100 psi), spray angle (commonly between 30° and 80°), and spray pattern (hollow cone, solid cone, or semi-solid cone). Using a nozzle with the correct flow rate but the wrong pattern can cause sooting, pulsating combustion, or delayed ignition. The thread size must also correspond to the nozzle holder; standard sizes are 1/8″ BSP or NPT, but always verify against the existing part. When replacing a nozzle of this type, check that the rating, angle, and pattern match the data plate on the burner. Install a new nozzle at the specified interval—typically once per heating season or after 2 000 operating hours—since wear and carbon deposits alter the spray quality. Handle the nozzle by the body only; contamination of the orifice or the internal filter will affect atomisation. Tighten to the torque recommended by the burner OEM; overtightening can distort the seat and cause leakage or spray distortion.
