Turbulators of this type are positioned inside the flue ways of a heat exchanger, typically between the primary heat exchanger and the flue gas outlet. Their function is to increase the residence time of the flue gases by creating turbulence, which improves the heat transfer to the water or to a secondary plate exchanger for domestic hot water production. In a boiler system, the turbulators work together with the burner and the heat exchanger; the slower gas flow yields a higher temperature differential and better efficiency, but also means the flue gas paths must be kept clear to avoid excessive back pressure. When selecting a replacement turbulator, the critical factors are the dimensions of the flue gas passage (length, width, and profile) and the number of ways or plates the heat exchanger has. The material – typically stainless steel, copper, or aluminium alloy – must match the original to withstand the operating temperatures and, in condensing boilers, the acidic condensate. The gasket type and condition also matter, as leaks around the turbulator can reduce efficiency or cause flue gas spillage. On inspection, check for scaling on the water side of the heat exchanger, soot buildup on the gas side, gasket deterioration, and, in condensing units, corrosion where condensate collects around the turbulator. Always confirm the exact model code and the heat exchanger configuration before ordering a part of this group.
