An oil preheater warms the fuel before it reaches the nozzle, improving atomisation in burners that fire on heavier grades of oil. This component is installed in the fuel line between the oil pump and the nozzle assembly. Parts of this type contain an electric heating element that raises the oil temperature to the viscosity required for proper spray formation. When the preheater fails, the burner may produce poor combustion, heavy sooting, or fail to ignite. Selection parameters for such preheaters include electrical supply voltage and wattage, the body configuration and connection thread sizes, and the control interface — some models incorporate an integral thermostat or temperature limiter. Replacement of a preheater must match the original electrical ratings and physical mounting to ensure correct heat output and safe operation. Typical failure modes include a burned-out heating element, a seized thermostat, or coking inside the oil passages that restricts flow. The preheater works in conjunction with the oil pump and the nozzle assembly. The pump draws fuel from the tank and delivers it under pressure; the preheater raises its temperature immediately before the nozzle. A failed preheater may allow cold oil to reach the nozzle, causing delayed ignition or incomplete combustion, while an overheating preheater can carbonise the oil and block the nozzle. Always verify the electrical connections and the thermal fuse when replacing a preheater of this class.
