An interrupted thermocouple is a flame-sensing safety device used in gas-fired burners, typically on pilot burner systems. Unlike a standard flame-safeguard using ionisation or UV detection, this type generates a small DC voltage when the pilot flame heats its tip. That voltage holds open a safety solenoid, allowing gas to flow to the main burner. If the pilot flame goes out, the voltage drops and the solenoid closes, cutting off the gas supply. The term "interrupted" refers to the operating mode: the thermocouple only needs to prove the flame during the ignition sequence, after which the main flame may be confirmed by other means, but the thermocouple remains in circuit as a backup. Parts of this type are selected by their immersion length, thread size, and the voltage range they produce under flame. When replacing a thermocouple on a burner, verify the physical dimensions—overall length, probe tip diameter, and thread type—match the existing mounting. Also check the electrical characteristics; most are rated for a specific millivolt output at a given flame temperature. Pay attention to the connector style at the cold end: some are crimp-on terminals, others use a threaded nut for a thermocouple adapter.
