The De Dietrich 97955318 ionisation probe is a flame‑proving electrode. In a gas‑fired burner, parts of this type sit inside the flame zone and conduct a small rectified current through the flame. The burner control reads that current as proof of flame; if the signal is lost the control locks out. Unlike an ignition electrode, an ionisation probe does not create a spark – it only senses flame. Such probes are consumable items. The tip erodes from continuous exposure to the flame, the ceramic insulator can crack from thermal shock, and soot deposits can interrupt the rectified signal. A drifting electrode gap, often caused by material fatigue or incorrect adjustment, may also prevent flame detection. When replacing an ionisation probe, the critical selection parameters are the length, the bend angle, the ceramic diameter, the gap distance, and the mounting flange design – all of which must match the burner head geometry. The electrode is normally shaped for a specific burner series; using a generic substitute may alter the gap or position and cause nuisance lockouts. On burners that include a pilot burner, the pilot provides a permanent or intermittent flame. In that arrangement the ionisation probe often monitors the pilot flame, which in turn lights the main burner. A correct flame signal from the probe is required for the burner control to open the main gas valve. If the probe is damaged or its position has shifted, the control will not receive a reliable signal and the burner will fail to ignite or will lock out after the safety time.
