This is an ignition transformer for gas or oil burners. Parts of this type step the mains voltage up to the level required to produce a spark across the ignition electrode gap. The transformer is energised only during the ignition phase, controlled by the burner control unit. Once the flame is established, the control switches off the transformer. When selecting an ignition transformer, the primary voltage (usually 230 V, though 110 V and 24 V variants exist), secondary voltage and current, duty cycle, and mounting arrangement must be matched to the burner design. The terminal pattern and cable connector type also need to correspond with the existing wiring. The ignition cable connecting the transformer to the electrode must be silicone-insulated to withstand high voltage and ambient heat. A cracked or hardened cable can leak the spark to earth, which may be mistaken for a faulty transformer. Always inspect the cable and electrode condition before replacing the transformer itself.
