The De Dietrich S54339 set comprises both an ignition electrode and an ionization electrode, together with a gasket. In a gas burner, the ignition electrode generates the spark that lights the fuel, while the ionization electrode proves the flame by passing a small rectified current through it. Both electrodes are positioned in the flame zone and are subject to gradual wear. The included gasket seals the mounting point against combustion gases. Electrodes of this type are selected by their physical dimensions – length, bend angle, insulator diameter, and electrode gap – as well as by the mounting flange pattern and the burner series for which they were originally shaped. Common failure modes include erosion of the electrode tip, cracking of the ceramic insulator, soot deposits that bridge the gap, and a drift in gap distance that weakens ignition reliability. When replacing, it is essential to match the electrode geometry to the burner head and to set the correct gap according to the burner manufacturer’s specification. The gasket should always be renewed to prevent leakage. These components are consumables; they should be inspected periodically and replaced when signs of wear or sooting appear. A pilot burner in the system carries a small permanent or intermittent flame that lights the main burner and continuously holds the flame signal, but the ignition and ionization electrodes remain the primary elements for starting and flame supervision on the main burner.
