This is an ignition probe (ignition electrode) for De Dietrich burners. It delivers the spark from the ignition transformer into the combustion chamber to ignite the fuel-air mixture. Parts of this type are mounted directly in or near the flame zone and are subject to thermal and electrical stress, making them consumable items that require periodic inspection and replacement. The ignition probe works together with the ignition transformer and the burner control unit; the control energises the transformer during the ignition phase, and a spark jumps across the electrode gap. When selecting a replacement ignition electrode of this type, the critical parameters are the electrode length and bend angle, the diameter and integrity of the ceramic insulator, the spark gap setting, and the shape and fixing dimensions of the mounting flange or bracket. Each burner series uses electrodes shaped specifically for that combustion head geometry. Typical failure modes include erosion or rounding of the electrode tip, cracks in the ceramic insulator caused by thermal shock or mechanical damage, soot or carbon deposits that bridge the gap, and a gap that has drifted out of specification, leading to delayed ignition or failure to light. On burners that also use a separate ionisation electrode for flame detection, the ignition electrode serves only the spark function; on some designs a single electrode may perform both roles, but this unit is described as an ignition probe and should be treated accordingly. When replacing, always check the gap and insulator condition, and ensure the electrode is correctly positioned relative to the burner head or pilot burner if one is present.
